Hi, I’m Jessica Hornbeck- Welcome to Purple Mom Blog!

I’m so glad you’re here. If you’re a single mom feeling overwhelmed by life’s challenges, know that you’re not alone. This blog is a space where we focus on what truly matters: personal growth, mental health, and financial wellness, all tailored specifically for single moms like us.

My Journey

Life isn’t Instagram-perfect, and neither is my story. I’m Jessica, a 34-year-old single mom of two teenagers (14 and 16). Yes, I was a teen mom. I am also drowning in debt, dealing with depression, and trying to figure out how to create a better life for my family. This isn’t your typical success story blog – I’m right in the middle of the struggle, and I’m taking you along for the real, unfiltered journey.

As someone who has struggled with some mental health issues, I have spent several days just lying around. I’m still not a happy-go-lucky person, in fact, those people kind of irritate me lol. I still have several bad days. But I have learned to manage it better and want to help others manage theirs.

I did manage to work my way through nursing school while raising 2 children on my own. It wasn’t easy, but I managed. I am a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Even on a nursing salary, I have always struggled financially. (Nurses don’t make as much as you think they do. Especially LPN’s). We often joke that LPN stands for low-paid nurse. But I have learned to manage over the years and would like to share my experiences with everyone. I will let you know what has and hasn’t worked for me. I will not say I am debt-free because I am not, yet. But I am getting closer.

Why I Started Purple Mom Blog

After spending countless nights scrolling through financial advice blogs and productivity tips, I realized something: most of these writers are sharing their success stories from the finish line. But what about those of us still stuck in the messy middle? That’s why I’m here. Not as an expert, but as someone who’s figuring it out day by day.

For years I was that mom who couldn’t afford to buy food or pay my bills. I still struggle somedays. We have eaten Ramen noodles or hot dogs and macaroni on several nights. As a nurse, I’ve always been drawn to helping others. Initially, I focused on health and wellness for moms, but as I reflected on my own journey, I realized the need for a space dedicated to the unique struggles of single moms who want more for themselves and their kids. That’s why Purple Mom Blog evolved into what it is today—a community where personal growth, mental health, and financial stability come together.

Life as a single mom isn’t easy—I know this firsthand. Like many of you, I’ve faced tough days balancing parenting, finances, and my own mental health. But along the way, I’ve discovered that growth is possible, even in the hardest seasons. By embracing personal development, finding tools to improve my finances, and learning how to care for my mental well-being, I’ve started transforming my life—and I’m here to help you do the same.

A Few Fun Facts About Me

First of all, I am a nerd. I love Harry Potter and all things Disney. (see my Harry Potter shirt in my picture?) My favorite TV shows are The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars, Once Upon a Time, and Game of Thrones. I love the fantasy and sci-fi genre. I also enjoy reading. I always have a book with me.

When I was younger, I used to love writing poetry and short stories. But after I became a mom, I quit doing it. I am hoping that writing a blog will get me back to my roots and do something I once enjoyed: Writing.

oh, one more thing . I love all things purple! 💜

Thanks for taking the time to get to know me! and I hope you enjoy my blog as much as I enjoy writing it!
